To Good to be True? Play & Freeze
Posted by Mrs Zeee on 05/12/2009
It’s Tuesday and time to ask: Is this product too good to be true?
It’s called Play and Freeze and it’s marketed as a fun way to make homemade ice cream. Here’s the scoop:
You place ingredients (cream, flavor, ice and salt) into the sphere.
Then you seal the opening and start the fun…
Shake, toss, shimmy the ball with friends and family for about 30 minutes and voila! Home made ice cream is ready-to-serve!

So have you heard of it? Used it?
I saw Play and Freeze for the first time on Food Network Sunday night and I have been doing some research to see if it’s legit.
Most user reviews say it works nicely and is a fun activity for kids — I don’t doubt it.
However, according to the reviews I’ve read, downsides include:
- It’s a lot of work for little return (but at least you’re getting a workout before you pig-out)
- Doesn’t fit standard ice-maker ice. (in other words, get the mallet and start crushing)
- You have to open the ball mid-way to mix the cream (well, isn’t this why you’re shaking it around in the first place?)
The price point is pretty customer friendly for the regular size: $27 (makes a pint of ice cream), so my feeling is why not give it a whirl? Or should I say, SWIRL? Mmmm….fudge-y :O)
Maybe I’ll buy it for all the kids in my family to toss around on Memorial Day but tell them it takes almost an hour for the ice cream to magically appear (wink, wink)
Afterall, it’s worth the money to keep the little buggers occupied… and I’ll stock some Turkey Hill in the freezer juuuust in case….

30 minutes of shaking and only 5 min. to eat! That wouldn’t be a good enough return on my investment. It does sound fun for the kids if they could last that long.

I am waaaaaay too lazy to do that!
It’s hard enough to get the plastic seal off the carton, and pull the lid off without ripping the side.
My thoughts are store bought…………

It sounds like a lot of work, and I dont’ think I would be able to get my kids to play with this for more than 5 minutes.
